BIS Certification is the official approval given by the Bureau of Indian Standards to ensure a product meets India’s quality, safety, and reliability norms.
It helps protect consumers by ensuring only standard-compliant products enter the market.
For many electronic, industrial, and consumer goods, BIS certification is mandatory before manufacturing, import, or sale in India.
BIS offers two major types of certification schemes, and hundreds of products fall under them.
1. ISI Certification (Product Certification Scheme)
- Mandatory for many products (cement, steel, electrical appliances, food products, etc.).
- Over 380+ products are covered under compulsory ISI Certification.
2. CRS Certification (Compulsory Registration Scheme)
- Mandatory for electronic and IT products.
- Around 80+ electronic items come under CRS (e.g., LED TVs, laptops, adapters, batteries, smartwatches, etc.).
Additional BIS Schemes:
- FMCS – Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme
- Hallmarking – For gold, silver, platinum jewellery
- ECO Mark – For environment-friendly products
- Management Systems Certification (not very common through BIS now)
EXPLANING BIS ADDITIONAL SCHEMES
1. FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme)
FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme) allows overseas manufacturers to obtain the BIS licence to sell their products in India. Under this scheme, BIS inspects the foreign factory, tests product samples, and certifies that the products meet Indian safety and quality standards.
FMCS Certification PROCESS
- Submit the application to BIS for the relevant product category.
- Appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) if the manufacturer is outside India.
- BIS officials conduct a factory inspection at the foreign manufacturing unit.
- Product samples are drawn and sent to BIS-recognized labs in India for testing.
- Test reports and inspection findings are reviewed by BIS.
- BIS issues the FMCS licence upon successful compliance.
- Manufacturer begins marking products with the ISI mark and follows ongoing surveillance.
2. Hallmarking – For gold, silver, platinum jewellery
Hallmarking is the official certification of gold, silver, and platinum jewellery to verify its purity and fineness. It ensures consumers receive authentic, accurately graded precious metal jewellery as per BIS standards.
Hallmarking Process
- Register with BIS as a jeweller under the Hallmarking scheme.
- Submit required documents like business registration, ID proofs, and premises details.
- Get jewellery tested for purity at a BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking Centre (AHC).
- Jewellery is stamped with the BIS hallmark (purity, BIS logo, AHC code).
- Certified jewellery is then approved for sale in the market.
3. ECO Mark – For environment-friendly products
Eco Mark is a certification by BIS for products that are environmentally friendly and meet specified eco-criteria. It helps consumers identify products that have minimal environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.
Eco Mark Process
1. BIS grants the Eco Mark license after compliance verification.
2 Apply to BIS with product details and required documents.
3. Product undergoes environmental and quality testing.
4.Management Systems Certification
Management Systems Certification is a formal approval that a company’s processes meet international standards (like ISO). It ensures consistent quality, safety, and efficiency across operations.
managment system cERTIFICATION Process
