WPC/ETA Certification

Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC) is a department under the Government of India responsible for regulating wireless and radio frequency devices in India.

WPC/ETA certification is required for electronic and wireless products that use radio frequencies such as:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • RFID
  • Zigbee
  • NFC
  • Wireless transmitters and receivers

ETA stands for Equipment Type Approval.

If a product uses wireless communication, it usually needs WPC ETA approval before being imported, sold, or used in India.

What is WPC ETA Certification?

ETA approval is granted by WPC for products operating on de-licensed frequency bands approved in India.

This certification confirms that:

  • the product operates on permitted frequencies,
  • complies with Indian wireless regulations,
  • and does not interfere with communication networks.

Products That Commonly Need ETA

Examples include:

  • Wireless keyboards and mice
  • Bluetooth speakers and earphones
  • Smart watches
  • Wi-Fi routers
  • IoT devices
  • Drones
  • Wireless cameras
  • Smart home devices
  • POS machines
  • RFID equipment

Main Documents Required

  • RF Test Report from an accredited lab
  • Product technical specifications
  • Authorization documents
  • Importer/manufacturer details
  • Product datasheet

Process Overview

Why It Is Important

Without WPC ETA approval:

  • products may get stopped at Indian customs,
  • import clearance can be delayed,
  • and sale of non-compliant wireless devices may not be permitted.

Difference Between WPC and ETA

  • WPC → Government authority
  • ETA → Approval/certification issued by WPC

It is known as a WPC certification or WPC /ETA approval.
